Biography
The Jagua is a township of the Colombian municipality of
Garzón, in the department of Huila. In Colombia it known as "El Pueblo de
las Brujas", but also for its traditional handicrafts.
La Jagua is the first and oldest town in Garzón, a
municipality located 117 km from Neiva, and one of the first towns in Huila. It
is characterized by its cobbled streets and its more than 300 single-story
houses and has proximately 3,000 inhabitants
Among its best-known festivities, the "Festival de las
Brujas" stands out, which takes place in November with comparsas,
theatrical performances, typical dances, traditional Huila music, orchestras
and artisan and gastronomic samples.

La jagua is known as a tourist town, full of traditions, such as the stories of witches, fique handicrafts, cultural festivals, gastronomy and the house museum of the sculptor Emiro Garzón

known nationally and internationally, in the municipality of Garzón, Huila. And
that is not just a slogan, according to its inhabitants, the witches there are
real Even today they still cause terror and disturb the tranquility of the
people. La Jagua is a town with 481 years of history, culture and tradition.
Its title as the town of witches was born in 1692 when an expedition of spanish conquerors arriven to the territory and they found the natives practicing witchcraft, althoung it was really an ancestral ritual that was misinterpreted by the Christian faith.
From that time the legend began, which has been reinforced over the years, part of the past and present history of la Jagua as the historic center of the departament of huila, to this day, the inhabitants still claim to fell that the witches attack them
The greatest legend of the witches in la Jagua dates from the year 1880, when one of them was burned in te main park of the town by order of the mayor Manuel Sánchez. That was the witch who even inspired a moniment in the of the park´s cobbled streets and her story is recorded in the book La Jagua, festival, magic and bewitchment
